Biofuels Digest- 5 Minutes with Karl Seck, CEO of Mercurius Biorefining
If you could snap your fingers and change one thing about the Advanced Bioeconomy, what would you change?- I would create a more robust investment community that would be willing to learn lessons from past mistakes, and use those lessons to become more sophisticated instead of turning their back on biofuels investments that are so crucial to our planet's energy strategy.

American producer of green jetfuel looking towards Danish technology
A new patented process can convert all kinds of biomass material to green jet fuel and chemicals. - Denmark may be the location for the European headquarters of the American effort. Backed with a new process, an American start-up company focused on second-generation biofuels is already looking out into the big world. They caught sight of Denmark as an area where there are both technological skills and a general understanding of liquid biofuels. Karl Seck, Executive Director of Mercurius Biorefining, visited Denmark early this summer, meeting at both Symbiosis Centre, Kalundborg and Haldor Topsoe, which produces the catalysts used in the process.

Energy Department Backs New Way to Make Diesel from Corn Stalks - MIT Technology Review Article
A novel chemical pathway could address the high cost of transporting cellulosic materials to make diesel fuel. - Within a year, a pilot plant in Indiana will start converting the stalks and leaves of corn plants into diesel and jet fuel. The plant will use a novel approach involving acid as well as processes borrowed from the oil and chemical industry, which its developers hope will make fuel at prices cheap enough to compete with petroleum. The plant, which will have the capacity to process about 10 tons of biomass a day; enough for about 800 gallons (3,000 liters) of fuel per day, will be built by Mercurius Biofuels of Ferndale, Washington, with the help of a grant from the U.S. Department of Energy of up to $4.3 million.

Mercurius Biofuels LLC official launch
Whole Energy Announcement - Mercurius Biofuels has been newly formed with the support of Whole Energy Fuels Corporation. The company will develop and commercialize what may be the most capital, energy, and carbon efficient process for a cellulosic fuel. Both National Labs and the Department of Energy have conducted research that may accelerate the development of the Mercurius process which requires no exotic enzymes or catalysts. Karl Seck, President of Mercurius, was also a key proponent of the relationship with Idaho Ethanol. Waste or low value feedstocks for biofuels are the only options for biofuels to be both economically and socially sustainable. The Whole Energy team has supported the utilization of these feedstocks for the production of biofuels since its founding in 2004.
